The Year 9 football team played Simon Langton Boys School in the final of the district cup on Thursday 4th May. The boys had previously beaten Canterbury Academy in the semi-final just before half term to progress into the final.
The boys started the game on the back foot and quickly found themselves behind through an early goal from The Langton. They weathered the storm through the next few phases of the game and equalised through a goal from Jack H following a Jack O corner. However, Langton’s lead was soon restored through some neat play and tidy finish within our box. This ignited the game into life, with the game becoming end to end. A clearance from Raif saw Alex S burst through on goal and header the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper. However, Herne Bay High were pegged back a third time through a Langton counterattack. The final 10 minutes saw Herne Bay calm the pace of the game down and take better care with the ball, this saw Max link well with Jack O down the right-hand side of the pitch, a fierce ball across the face of goal from Max saw Liam arrive at the back post to finish a well worked goal.
Half time came upon us following an action-packed opening 35 minutes. The boys regrouped and found themselves fortunate to be back in the game, a conversation around composure and defending as a unit saw a great response in the second half. The boys started to display some better attacking football and regain the ball better across the pitch. The boys were rewarded for their efforts when the ball fell to Liam, who controlled the ball out of the air and smashed the ball home from 25 yards out midway through the second half. The boys defended superbly well and saw the game out meaning they won the district cup 4-3. This is a great effort for their hard work this year; they weren’t as successful as they wanted to be in other competitions, so they were delighted to lift some silverware this year.
